Hunting The Rut
8 Point
The rut is undoubtedly one of the greatest times of the year to harvest a mature buck. We put a lot of time into hunting the rut, we like to sit from daylight to dark if we can. But we have to be hunting in the right places to harvest a mature buck. We like to hunt around the does, that is where the bucks will be. We also like to hunt around rubs, scrapes, and heavily used trails. When finding good areas such as these, we try to stay well camouflaged and we also use scent cover to increase our chances at harvesting a mature buck. We wear God's Country Camouflage Late Season pattern. This is the best pattern we have used for staying well camouflaged in the fall and winter.
Calls can be very effective in the rut. Our two main standbys is a bleat or a grunt call. We have found these to be hard to beat in all phases of the rut. Rattling works well too, but you have to know when the best time is to rattle, most of our success with rattling has been in pre rut but it can be effective later in the rut at times. Scents can also work well in the rut, but we have found that most of the deer will tend to get spooked by scents, especially mature deer. We believe that sometimes the best scent is no scent. Trying to have everything in your favor is critical when hunting the rut. Try these tips and techniques, hunt hard and hunt smart, and you will be sure to harvest a big dominant mature buck.
