Winter can be a very hard time of year to catch trout and panfish. They are very sluggish and are very hard to get to bite. In the winter in order to get them to bite, we downsize our baits. We also use ultra light tackle and 4 to 6lb test line. Our favorite hardbaits for trout in the winter are Rapala Countdowns in the small sizes, Mini Fat Raps, and Ultra light shads. We also catch a lot of trout on bread in the creeks, and we also love to throw small trout worms. Small spinners are also a great choice. If you are fly fishing, try bead head nyphs and Wooly Buggers. For panfish in the lakes such as Bluegill, Crappie, and Yellow Perch, we like to fish depths from 10 to 20 feet deep around rocks and brush. We like to throw Rapala Countdowns in the small sizes and use the countdown method to get them at the depth the panfish are. Rapala Jigging Raps in the small sizes are also great choices. Another one of our favorite winter panfishing baits is small panfishing jigs. We like to use single tail 2 inch grubs and fish it around brush and rocks. We either slow roll it or hop it on the bottom. Use these baits and techniques and you will catch trout and panfish in the winter.
